There is a small shrine located behind the main hall in this temple which is known as the “the stone of love”. So legend says that if you want to find your true love, there are 2 big stones placed in the center of the shrine. You should first touch the stone and close your eyes, then with your eyes closed continue walking to the other stone too. Imagine seeing millions of glittering lanterns everywhere in a snowy town. This is a winter festival which is held annually in February in Otaru. Otaru has two main festival areas which are lit up daily during the evenings, where you can see the Unga Kaijo area and the Temiyasen Kajio area fully light up with lanterns and small snow statues, which have lights placed inside them.
Locals who hail from this part of the town also put up lantern displays in front of their homes and shops, adding more charm to the festival’s spirit. These two areas are located within a fifteen minutes distance only from the train station, making it very accessible to travel and enjoy the town’s ambiance on foot. There are also some food stands by the Temiyasen Kaijo area where you can enjoy the lanterns and eat feast on some local delicacies.
